What is Software anyways?

In a previous post we went over the definiton of IS and how it's considered a combination of various components, one of the major components is Software, in this post we will be defining this term.

In simple words: Software is a set of instructions that operate hardware and tells it what to do.

 It’s also worth mentioning that computer software is a virtual component not a physical one. Alan Turing was the first to propose a theory of software in one of his essays but the word itself was coined by John turkey in the American Mathematical Monthly in 1958.

Software can generally be classified into two major categories which are:

• System software
• Application software

In the next post ,we will be going over the definition of each of these two categories with examples to better understand their uses and impact on the digital world.
