Applications
Following the previous post where we discussed all about System software, in this post we shed the light on the other group of Software programs which are application software or end-user
software, to define these we simply say
that an application software is a program that enables the user to do specific
tasks such as creating documents, spreadsheets, databases, sending emails,
editing photos and even playing games.
Application software is created by
developers and programmers usually to solve a problem or enable users to do
tasks in a faster way with less effort and less time consumed.
An example of an application software on Android that has become
recently very popular in Egypt would be ‘Careem’. This application allows users
to take rides, pre-schedule them, get information about the car they are taking
and its driver, determine their destination beforehand, order food and get it delivered,
shop online and get their shopping items delivered, and many more amazing
features. It’s a better alternative for a Taxi car since it’s much safer and
much cheaper. This application has managed to bring together people who want to
have part-time jobs and get paid with people who need a safe and convenient way
of transportation. The company itself started in 2012 and now has over 30
million users worldwide and over 250,000 drivers [3].
This goes to
show how a software application can benefit such a large number of people with
just few clicks. Careem is not the only company to provide this kind of
service, in Malaysia people use ‘Grab’ which is another great application with
almost the same features and based on the same idea.
There are many examples
of how application software has managed to solve problems in specific
communities, which all prove the massive impact of software on the digital
world and the world we live in. As a software engineering student, my goal
would be to build and create software that would solve issues in my country and
possibly in the whole world. Who would have imagined that few lines of code
could put an end to major problems in our world? The future will surely tell us
more stories, as mankind keeps reaching for prosperity and as there is further
progress in the IT world, we will see even more problems being solved in few
clicks in front of our eyes.
